About the Artist

Introduction

Jo was born in Liverpool, UK and grew up near the waterfront of the River Mersey. An early decision to study Art and History at University soon evolved a desire for a greater involvement in the fringe theatre, poetry and art scenes in Liverpool.

Jo particularly likes the work of Burra, Braque, Cezanne, Da Stael, Gaugain, Klee, Kandinsky, Mackintosh, outsider art, urban art and 'a million other things'.

Conceptual Statement of Art

Filtered through an urban upbringing, these works reflect the social and political changes affecting the artist immediate landscape. Pieces are infused with the soul of the city, from the silver grey of rain on the concrete to the jewel like colours to be found in the stillness of a city building after hours. The work highlights the regeneration of our cities and lives, preparing it for new generations and encouraging the observer to find new ways of seeing the things that normally pass us by.

Biography

Jo was born in Liverpool in the 1970s and grew up in the inner city near the waterfront of Liverpool. From the age of 11 Jo was taught life drawing, batik, sculpting and various other art forms through teachers who allowed the art room to be opened 'outside of hours'. Following school Jo was due to study art and history at university but dropped out and got involved in the underground poetry and theatre scene. This was the early 1990s Liverpool, where the fringe theatre and poetry scene were thriving, the colour and energy from this scene is captured in Jo's work. The waterfront scene, urban landscapes and blocks of colour and 'sculpted' paint are predominant in Jo's work.

She plays an active role in Transvoyeur, an international arts and cultural exchange programme with links in Liverpool, New York and many other places.

Jo is currently completing a Masters Degree in Fine Art and concentrating on her own practice.
